Donald Jack Detherage, 86, of Somerset, Kentucky, departed this life on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
Jack was born in Pulaski, Kentucky on January 24, 1925, son of the late Ruth Quinton Detherage. This Honorable Kentucky Colonel was a "Jack of all trades." Beginning as a youth, he ran a huckster wagon for the general store. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as signalman aboard US Navy ships, including the Francis Scott Key and the McBrutten Bryan. After the war, Jack was owner and operator of Detherage Freight Lines and several saw mills in Pulaski, Irvine, McCreary and surrounding counties. He was co-founder and served on the Board of Directors for the Bank of Somerset and Ace Body Co. He continued serving his family and community as chairman of the Pulaski County Board of Education, as chairman of the Pulaski County Democratic Party, serving on the local Board of Elections, operating a farm and trading real-estate. He loved to fish and spending time with his family. Before his death, he was baptized and was accepted as a member of Beacon Hill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Faye Hampton Detherage, daughter, Jackie & (James) Nelson, three grandchildren, Lana & (Fredrick) Mayfield, Jennifer & (Bruce) Gover and Daniel Nelson, three great-grandchildren, Jonathan Nelson, Jessica Nelson and Justin Mayfield, all of Somerset and two nephews, Bob Detherage and John Detherage, both of Louisville, KY.
Along with his mother, Ruth Quinton Detherage, he was preceded in death by his brother, Julius Detherage and great-grandson, Jarrod Mayfield.
A graveside service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Pulaski Cemetery with Rev. Sammy Adkins officiating and military honors by American Legion Post #38.
Burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 5 PM Friday at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.
