Dr. Horace Floyd Stewart, Jr., age 84 of Eubank, Kentucky, died on Thursday, January 10, 2013, from complications of diverticulitis. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Dot Arn, four children, Dona Elizabeth Beall (and Mel) of Jefferson, Georgia, Bonnie Catherine Kathe (and Ray) of Villa Rica, Georgia, Pamela Anne Keane (and John) of Athens, Georgia, and Terence Edward Stewart of Brooklyn, New York. Additional survivors are his grandchildren, Apryl Elizabeth Patterson, Sarah Victoria Kathe, Anne Esther Kathe, Pricilla Marie Kathe, David Michael Kathe, Jason Floyd Addison, Ian Denison Keane, Paige Elizabeth Keane, and Rachel Catherine Keane, as well as one great grandson, James Edward Patterson. Horace Stewart is predeceased by his parents, Horace Floyd Stewart, Sr. and Ruth Stewart Cooper, his brother William Edward Stewart, and two late wives: Elizabeth Joyce Dunn Stewart (mother of his children) and Wilma Holsomback Stewart. Born in Daytona Beach, Florida, he grew up in Daytona Beach and Key West, Florida, and Queens, New York. He served his country in the U.S. Army in Italy. He received his undergraduate degree from Penn State and graduate degrees in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Florida and Florida State University, where he also completed his doctoral degree. Most of his professional life was spent in Georgia and later in Kentucky. His hobbies included gardening, cooking, canning salsa, flying small aircraft, fishing, wine-making, numismatics, playing Free Cell, and doing rudimentary carpentry. He loved watching reruns of Gunsmoke on TV and Westerns in general. He wrote 19 articles published in scientific journals and co-edited the textbook “Introductory Experiential Psychology." His doctoral dissertation was on the study of the relationship between certain personality measures and hallucinoidal visual imagery. He worked as a full professor, assistant professor and instructor at three southern universities and colleges. His work history also included supervising director of several community agencies or organizations which provided psychological support to local residents, three mental hospitals and private practice. He frequently testified in court as an expert witness about the competency of individuals to stand trial. He fully retired in 2011 although he continued to maintain his professional license. He and his late wife, dog show judge Wilma (Billie) Stewart, very successfully bred and showed Alaskan Malamutes, which are well known and represented all over the world, including Japan. His constant companion was his red, smooth coated miniature dachshund, the Red Baron. He was also fond of and helped care for the Irish Wolfhounds his wife, Dot, bred, showed and judged. He held a Kentucky License in Psychology, was a Fellow, American Academy of clinical Psychology, Member of American College of Forensic Examiners, Kentucky Health Service Provider, Certified, National Academy of Professional Psychology, Diplomate in Clinical Psychology, and held a Georgia License in Psychology. He was a member of the American Psychological Association. Horace Stewart was a brilliant, honest, industrious, humble man, without artifice. He was well respected by his peers and was a loving, responsible father and a wonderful husband and friend. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, February 2, 2013 at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, 206 W. Columbia St. Somerset, KY with Rev. Marcia Hunter officiating.
