September 24, 1956 — April 28, 2013

Paul Rowan Weiler, 56, of Science Hill, Kentucky, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at his residence. Paul Weiler was born in Harlan, Kentucky on September 24, 1956, son of the late Sandford Logan Weiler Sr., M.D. and Betty Fulton Weiler. He attended Franklin County High School and the University of Kentucky, where he was a tuba player extraordinaire in the UK Marching Band. He received his Master's degree from Eastern Illinois University, where he was a teaching assistant. He loved the camaraderie and playing the bass and bass guitar in the many jazz bands he organized over the years. Paul was a music teacher and band director at Franklin County High School, Davis County High School, Monticello Independent High School and Northern Middle School. He was a music teacher at Highland Elementary School and Waynesburg Elementary School in Lincoln County. Wherever Paul taught, he was loved by both his students and his colleagues. Paul is survived by his wife, Kathy Jasper Weiler, Science Hill; one sister, Jayne (C. Stephen) Hendrickson, Harlan; two brothers, S. Logan (Rhonda) Weiler, Jr., Lexington and Charles Clay (Rebecca) Weiler, Florence; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sedahlia Jasper Crase and Ike Crase, Ames, Iowa. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Logan (Sarah) Weiler, III and Nick (Ashley) Weiler, Lexington; Adele (Pete) Cornett and Casey (Marcy )Hendrickson, Harlan; Stefan (Ty) Hendrickson, Lexington; Laura (Colin) Stevens, Conway, SC; Suzanne (Kevin ) Hoover, Philadelphia, PA; Robert and Patrick Weiler, Florence; Kirsten Crase, Takoma Park, MD; and Brandon Crase, Chicago, IL. He was also blessed with nine great nieces and nephews and many friends everywhere he went. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert Carr Weiler, and his parents-in-law Ezra and Exie Jasper. Paul Weiler was a devoted, loving, and loyal husband, son, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was compassionate and helpful to those in need, whether that need was a can of chicken soup, money for a band trip, or a friend, family member, or stranger in need. He was an accomplished jazz musician and a tireless, dedicated teacher, who spent long hours preparing for his students; Paul was the epitome of a caring, warm-hearted person with a wonderful sense of humor. He always had "good manners." Paul was thoughtful, kind, and an inspirational role model for all of us. A gathering of friends to celebrate Paul's life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Morris and Hislope Funeral Home in Science Hill. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 2 at Science Hill Church of the Nazarene with Dr. Curtis Sellers officiating. A light supper will be served by the church members following the service on Thursday. Interment will be held at Lakeside Memorial Gardens at a later date. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Paul R. Weiler Band Music Fund, c/o Kathy Weiler, to be used for school band instruments in various schools around the state. Morris and Hislope Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
