Baker Grant Carter

Baker Grant Carter, 84, of Canary Avenue in Somerset, Kentucky, husband of Inis Jewell (Foley) Carter, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2008 as the result of an automobile accident. He was born in Monroe City, Indiana on October 3, 1923, son of the late Emmet Clarence and Sarah Ella (Reel) Carter. He began his career with Kresge Company and then went on to work for Kmart in Detroit, MI. He was employed with Sears Roebuck in Troy, MI for 30 years before his retirement. He was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran, having served on the USS New Jersey as a radar specialist. He was a member of Duke Memorial Baptist Church and the American Legion Post #38. He was baptized by Bro. Elmo Mounce on Christmas Day in 2001. Mr. Carter is survived by his wife of 53 years, Inis Jewell (Foley) Carter of Somerset, sister-in-law, Mary Ruth Broaddus of Bloomfield, KY, thirty four nieces and nephews, a host of great nieces and great nephews and fishing friend, Joe Candido. He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law, S.R. Foley, mother-in-law, Sarah (McHargue) Foley, four brothers, Clarence Hansell Carter, Emmett Buell Carter, Clifford Stanton Carter and Austin Mack Carter, one sister, Mary Alice Carter Burke, sisters-in-law, Leora Prewitt and Ethel Mae Sutton, brothers-in-law, Paul R. Foley, Earl Junior Foley and George Edwin Foley and niece, Clell Dean Godby. A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home, Science Hill, KY with Bro. David Morris and Bro. Elmo Mounce officiating. Military honors by American Legion Post #38. Burial will be in Lancaster Cemetery. Visitation will be after 10 AM Saturday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Bill Broaddus, Russ Sutton, Darwin Foley, Mac Godby, Joe Rusch and Gary Foley. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Broaddus, Eugene Broaddus, Cron Broaddus, Joe Sutton, Billy Joe Osborne, Joe Candido, the Godby family and Duke Memorial Baptist Church Adult Sunday School Class. Donations may be made to Duke Memorial Baptist Church, Love Divine Baptist Church or Freedom Baptist Church in Lancaster, KY. Morris & Hislope Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
