John Lowell Baxter

March 29, 1946 — March 2, 2014

John Lowell Baxter, 67, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2014, surrounded by his family at his home on Willow Brook Farm in Somerset. John and his wife, Alberta "Bertie" Wesley Baxter, would have been married 49 years on April 4. They have two children, David & (Caroline) Baxter and Emily & (David) Duryea. He was born in Keavy, Kentucky on March 29, 1946, son of the late James Scott and Celia Elizabeth Williams Baxter. John was the brother to ten siblings: the late Orpha & (Warren) Anders, Nylene & (the late Raymond) Reeves, Nell & (the late Charles) Nelson, Norma & (Atwood) Sizemore, Betty & (John) Gill, and Susie & (Vernon) Carr, the late Ira & (Ima) Baxter, Ermon & (Angela) Baxter, Kenneth & (Lee) Baxter, and Jim & (Zoe) Baxter. He was also a brother-in-law to Bill & (Sharon) Wesley, the late Joe Wesley, and the late Mike LaRue. Known by countless students as Mr. Baxter, John retired from teaching at Pulaski County High School in Somerset, Kentucky. He was a passionate teacher of chemistry, physics, and mathematics, who encouraged and inspired his students. John was a faithful servant of God, living his daily life to bring glory to The Father. Additionally, he was a preacher of the gospel for 40 years. He was a member of the Science Hill Church of Christ. John loved being outdoors, whether it be gardening or working his cattle. He found joy in the simple pleasures of God's creation. He is a man of many roles and accomplishments, none of which brought him more pride than being a devoted Papaw to his five grandchildren: William Baxter, Ella Duryea, Jonathan Duryea, James David Baxter, and Jenna Duryea. John's eight surviving brothers and sisters, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, join his wife, Bertie, his children, and grandchildren in celebrating his life and mourning his passing. A funeral service will be held at 7 PM Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with David Baxter, Jonathan Brinson, Scott Eubank, Randy Reynolds and Phil Morgan officiating. Burial will be in Science Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 PM Thursday at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland, 100 Parkway Drive, Somerset, KY 42503. Morris & Hislope Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
