Marjorie Ella Jones, 81, of Somerset, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Pineville Community Hospital after a long illness.
She was born in Pineville, Kentucky on May 8, 1933, daughter of the late Johnny and Gladys Marcum Jones.
She is survived by her brother, John Elijah Jones and his wife, Jennifer, a niece, Jonna Jones Knox & (Mike), great-niece, Mikala Knox and great-nephew, John Thomas Knox. She is also survived by very special friends and neighbors, Denver and Marjorie Barrett and special cousins, Mark Saylor and Bea Jones and many other cousins and friends.
Even though confined to a wheelchair since 1947, Marjorie led a full and active life. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Somerset and volunteered as secretary on many occasions. She went to work for Kentucky Utilities in 1951 and retired as office manager after 44 years. She was a past member of the Somerset Junior Woman's Club and the Somerset Business and Professional Women's Club, where she held several offices including chairperson and was voted Woman of Achievement in 1988. She was a member of Kentuckians' Voice for Crime Victims and a volunteer for the Pulaski County American Cancer Society, where she was Secretary of the Board for two years and Team Captain for Relay for Life for three years.
Marjorie was a member of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution since 1984 until present and served as First Vice Regent, Somerset Chapter, Credentials Chairman, Kentucky Society and Vice Chairperson of the WWII Memorial Challenge.
Marjorie was obviously interested in Genealogy and loved to travel in her hand controlled van. She was an avid reader, loved to knit, crochet, play the piano, paint and also played the flamenco guitar and hosted many dinner parties for friends of her graduating class. She was a truly remarkable woman and one who inspired everyone who knew her.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Monday, July 14, 2014 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with Dr. French Harmon officiating.
Visitation will be after 9 AM Monday at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at Jones Cemetery in Ewing, VA.
Burial will be in Jones Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be John Thomas Knox, Mike Knox, Mark Saylor, Denver Barrett, Joe Jones, Roscoe Jones, Chester Smith, Ronnie Lowe, Norman Williams, Rev. Larry Fultz, John Shackleford, Pearl Ray Lefevers, David Ray Stewart, Jim Stewart III and Dr. Shawn Fugate.
