Laura Kate French Whitis, 77, of Somerset, Kentucky, departed this life on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital after a long illness.
She was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky on December 11, 1936, daughter of the late William Joel "W.J." and Gertrude Gentry French. She retired from Southern Belle Dairy after more than 30 years of employment and was a member of Eubank Baptist Church and former member of Northside Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Vernon B. Whitis, her two sons, Jimmy Whitis and his wife Tammy and Doug Whitis and his wife Jackie, both of Eubank, five grandchildren, Eric Campbell of Lexington, KY, Ashley Whitis Gates and her husband Chris of Somerset, Josh Whitis and his wife Nancy of Science Hill, Chad Whitis and his wife Tiffany of Somerset and Amber Whitis of Eubank, eight great-grandchildren, McKayla Gates, Hayley Gates, Kade Slusher, Carson Slusher, Landon Scott Mobley, Calan Gage Long, Bentley Reece Gates and Ansley Jay Whitis, two brothers, Van French of Somerset and George French of Ohio and one sister, Agatha Todd of Somerset.
She was preceded in death by her parents, W.J. and Gertrude French, seven brothers, J.F. "Juddy" French, Elmer French, L.V. Henry, June French, Bill French, Dale French and Marion French and three sisters, Stella Price, Ella Hargis and Gussie Clark.
A devoted wife, loving mother and granny, Laura Kate was a wonderful cook and most enjoyed having her family over for dinners.
A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with Bro. Scott Hughes and Bro. Shelby Reynolds officiating.
Burial will be in Eden Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 5 PM Saturday at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Eubank Baptist Church Building Fund or the Dabney or Science Hill Fire Departments.
