Inis Jewell Foley Carter, 82, of Canary Avenue in Somerset, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2008 at her residence.
She was born in Garrard County, Kentucky on November 3, 1925, the seventh child of S.R. and Sarah Elizabeth McHargue Foley. In earlier life she was called "Inis", but later was called "Jewell". She grew up in Hackley in Garrard County, where her father and mother ran the Hackley Store. She accepted Jesus as her savior in her early years and joined Freedom Baptist Church. In June 1945, she graduated from Paint Lick High School and then moved to Lexington where she attended and graduated from Lexington Beauty School as a licensed hairdresser, residing at Lynhurst Place. In 1949 she became co-owner of the Rosemont Garden Beauty Shop in Lexington. After operating the shop for five years, she sold the business in 1954 for a higher calling in life. She had met a young Navy veteran from Indiana by the name of Baker Grant Carter.
In 1954, Baker Carter was the manager of Kresge in Lexington but was being transferred to Michigan. Inis, his bride to be, also moved to the same area and worked for the exclusive Leon's Beauty Shop in Grosse Point. Inis Jewell married Baker Carter on October 10, 1954 at Temple Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan by Pastor Joe Wade. The couple purchased a home on Lorrane Street in Warren, Michigan.
Inis Jewell worked at Leon's as a hairdresser until 1987 and then moved to the Magic Mirror and worked there until her retirement in April 1989. On June 7, 1989 they returned to Somerset, Kentucky to be near her oldest sister, Leora and her niece, Clell Dean Godby. In the winter months they would spend time in Florida.
She was a witness for her Lord and Savior, known for never meeting a stranger, she made friends wherever she went. She loved to take photographs and had an interest in cooking. Over her lifetime she collected cookbooks and thousands of recipes. She was the favorite aunt of many nephews and nieces, remembering them all on birthdays and at Christmas.
She was a member of Senior Friends at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, Pulaski County Extension Homemakers, Duke Memorial Baptist Church and the auditorium Sunday school class at the church.
She is survived by one sister, Mary Ruth Foley Broaddus of Bloomfield, KY, sisters-in-law, Morine Moore of Mintonville, KY and Darlene Foley of Lancaster, KY, numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Baker Grant Carter, who died on May 20, 2008, her parents, two sisters, Leora Foley Prewitt and Ethel Mae Foley Sutton, three brothers, Paul Russell Foley, George Edwin Foley and Earl Junior Foley and niece, Clell Dean Godby.
A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home, Science Hill, KY with Bro. David Morris and Bro. Elmo Mounce officiating.
Burial will be in Lancaster Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Gary Foley, Josh Godby, Terry Broaddus, Joe Rusch, Billy Joe Osborne and David Godby.
Honorary pallbearers will be Nancy Godby Elliott, Helen Norfleet, Katherine Pelphrey Whitlock and Marjorie Montgomery.
Donations may be made to Duke Memorial Baptist Church in Somerset, Freedom Baptist Church in Lancaster, American Lung Association or Hospice of Lake Cumberland.
