Mary Susan Cook Thompson, 91, died at the Hospice of Lake Cumberland Jean Waddle Care Center. She was born on October 24, 1922 to Edward K. and Myrtle Cook. Her husband, Hobart Roy Thompson, preceded her in death in 1989. Mary Susan graduated from Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College (EKU). Mary was blessed with her children, Warren Cook & (Cathy) Thompson of Somerset, Ky, Elaine Sue & (Larry) Lewis of Edgewood, Ky, Carol Jean & (John) Sayre of Whispering Pines, N.C.; one brother, Edward K. & (Evelyn) Cook, Jr. of Mountain City, Tn.; seven grandchildren, Faith Evelyn Thompson of Somerset, Shannon & (Ginger) Thompson of Somerset, Ashley Spalding of Lexington, Susan Michelle & (Matt) Technow of Florence, Michael & (Erica) Moradshahi, and Ramin Moradshahi; eight great-grandchildren, Asher and Zoe Thompson of Somerset, Kendal and Konner Spalding of Lexington, Jessica and Alexis Sue of Florence, Jonathan and Savanna Grace Moradshahi of Omaha, N.E. She was preceded in death by her parents Edward K. and Myrtle Cook; her husband, Hobart Roy Thompson; a brother, William Allen Cook; and a grandchild, Dustin Joseph Lewis. While serving as Pulaski Co., School Lunch Director Mary Susan wrote the first grant application for the county's Head Start Program which became the prototype for the nation. Mary Susan was always concerned with promoting educational opportunities in Southern Kentucky, working tirelessly with the Governor and State Legislature in this effort. She also hosted a local radio program of many years, "Focus on Education". Mary Susan's deep belief in God was inspired by the faith of her mother Stella Myrtle Cook, and her Grandma Susie. A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Monday, October 20, 2014 at the chapel of Morris & Hislope Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Poplar Grove Cemetery in Willailla, Ky. Visitation for Ms. Mary Susan Thompson will be from 12 Noon Monday, October 20, 2014 until time for funeral services at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home. The family request donations to the Hospice of Lake Cumberland Jean Waddle Care Center. Morris & Hislope Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
