Vernie Ray Vaught

Vernie Ray Vaught, son of the late Luther Clarence Vaught and Goldie Weddle Vaught, left this earthly home for his eternal home on Thursday, April 14, 2016. He was born in the Hogue community on May 26, 1923. He attended Science Hill Independent School from grades 1 through grade 12. Upon graduating high school, he entered the United States Navy. Upon discharge on March 30, 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, Lois Chestine Roy on April 16, 1946. He then attended the Eastern Kentucky University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Agriculture and furthered his education at University of Kentucky, where he graduated with a Masters of Science in Education. Vernie was 32nd Degree Mason/Scottish Rite and a member of the Oleika Shrine Temple. Vernie and Chestine moved to Columbia, KY, where he finished student teaching in the Adair County School system. Moving to Crab Orchard, KY, he joined Crab Orchard Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School for several years. Vernie taught Vocational Agriculture and was homeroom teacher in the Lincoln County School system until 1962 to a host of wonderful men and women who, until his death, included him in their class reunions and visited him at Somerset Nursing and Rehab. He moved to Science Hill, KY in 1962 and became District Sales manager for Dekalb Pfizer Genetics. Vernie was a member of Northside Baptist Church. He was Chairman of the Deacon board and taught Sunday School there for 50 + years. He retired from Dekalb in 1985 and began preparing income tax returns for hundreds of loving caring people in Pulaski and surrounding counties. He was a devoted, loving father to Laura Ellen Vaught Nash and a wonderful father-in-law to Alan Robert Nash of Oneida, TN. An exceptional grandfather to Katlyn Michelle Buxton of Lexington, KY,he is also survived by two sisters, Viola Mae Crase of Clarksville, IN and Verlie Marie Waddle of Chattanooga, TN, three nephews, David Vaught, Ed Waddle & (Cathy) and John Crase & (Tracy) and four nieces, Barbara Bray & (Bob), Vicki Denney & (Jim), Carol Crase and Linda Stephens. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, William Vinston Vaught & (Irene) and Victor Lee Vaught & (Peggy), one sister-in-law, Peggy Cain Vaught and two brothers-in-law, James Waddle and Dauphus Crase. He will be missed by a host of loving family and friends, along with the very caring, kind and attentive staff of Somerset Nursing & Rehab. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM Sunday, April 17, 2016 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with Bro. Dave Muse and Bro. Damon Jones officiating. Burial will be in Science Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6 PM Saturday at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home. Morris & Hislope Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
