Susan Avelene Spears, 86, of Hall Street, in Science Hill, Kentucky passed away Thursday August 27, 2009 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
She was born in Ware, Kentucky on January 1, 1923, daughter of the late Thomas Acton and Margaret Louanna Dick Barber. She was the head cook at Science Hill Elementary School and a member of Bethel Ridge United Methodist Church. She was a seamstress, avid reader and quilter.
She is survived by four daughters, Madeline & (Carroll) Vaught and Faustine & (Floyd) Weddle, both of Science Hill, Loeda & (Raymond) New of Somerset and Donna & (Delmer) Ashley of Cincinnati, OH, five sisters, Barthella Moore of Science Hill, Inez Godbey of Cincinnati, OH, Shirley Hetzel of Ludlow, KY, Peggy Randolph of Bethel Ridge and Patsy Warren of Science Hill, nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Spears, whom she married on January 5, 1939 and who died on June 20, 1971, twins, James Garfield and Thomas Acton Spears, a second set of twins who died in infancy, one son, Joseph E. Spears, who died in infancy, one brother, Chester Ray Barber, who died in infancy and two sisters, Lavene Scott and Hester Roberts.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Sunday, August 30, 2009 at Bethel Ridge United Methodist Church with Bro. Doug Stutz and Bro. Gene Sweet officiating.
Burial will be in Bethel Ridge Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 6 PM Saturday at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.
