Frank V. Sawyers, 87, Barnesburg Road, Somerset, died Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at his residence. He was born February 10, 1919 in Manchester, Kentucky, son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Bertha Hayre Sawyers. He was a World War II Army veteran, and entered the military at Fort Thomas, Kentucky on November 13, 1941. He fought with the 1st Brigade 147th Infantry in Guadalcanal, Bismark, Archipelago, Iwo Jima and New Caledonia. He was decorated with the Infantryman Badge, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, American Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Ribbon. He worked for Ikerd & Bandy Coal Company for 13 years unitl he had to retire at age 52. He was of the Baptist faith and was a wonderful provider for his family. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Beatrice Garrison Sawyers, whom he married on September 26, 1947. He is also survived by four children, Marcia June Slavey, Michael Wayne Sawyers, Marie Mink and Bertha & (Merle) Burdine, all of Somerset, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, James Slavey. A funeral service will be held at 10 AM, Friday, June 23, 2006 at the chapel of Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with Bro. David Green officiating. Burial will be in Mill Springs National Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post #38. Visitation after 6 PM Thursday. Morris & Hislope Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
