Vernon Thomas Dick left this earthly abode for his heavenly home on Friday, the 23rd day of April 2010. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on April 13, 1928, he was the son of the late Johnny C. and Ida M. Randolph Dick. He was 82 years old.
Vernon accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in October, 1957 and his service to the Lord continued as long as he was physically able. A longtime member of Northside Missionary Baptist Church in Science Hill, he served in many positions, Sunday School Superintendent, Training Union Director, Trustee and Music Director for 40+ years.
He began driving for Eldridge Trucking as a teenager and worked there until his retirement in 1985. After retirement, he worked for his brother, Ronnie, at ValleyView Super Market in Science Hill and spent many hours helping Ronnie mow, which was one of this greatest loves, and laughing and talking with his brother, Bill, and the gang at Hardee's.
He is survived by a daughter, Sonya Karen Morris and her husband, James "Chief" Morris of Science Hill, and a granddaughter, Amanda Karen Morris of Lexington. Also surviving are two brothers, Bill & (Lou) Dick of Science Hill and Ronnie & (Mary Ellen) Dick of Science Hill; one sister Bernice & (Jim) Broyles of Nicholasville; three brothers-in-law, Bobby Harness of Science Hill, David & (Carolyn) Phelps of Science Hill, and Dale & (Carol) Phelps of Louisville; one sister-in-law Rissie Dick of Melbourne, Florida. Many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews also to survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Jean Phelps Dick; father-in-law, Earl Phelps; mother-in-law, Grace Edythe Cain Phelps; one brother, Gassel Dick; two sisters, Burnetta Dick Stringer and Glenice Dick Harness; one brother-in-law, Clyde Stringer; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services will be at Northside Missionary Baptist Church on Tuesday, April 27th, at 1:00 PM with Bro. Dave Muse, Bro. Sammie Adkins, and Bro. Patrick Butcher officiating.
Burial will be in Science Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday April 26th, 2010 after 6:00 PM at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home and after 12 Noon at Northside Missionary Baptist Church until after funeral services.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Northside Missionary Baptist Church New Hymnal and Bible Fund or Science Hill Cemetery Association.
