Dr. George Gartly Moore, age 85, of Louisville, KY, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at Anthology Senior Living in Louisville.
He was born on February 26, 1939 to the late George Clinton and Eva Byrd Moore in Memphis, TN. His passion and interest in agriculture, farming, and veterinary medicine began during his youth while helping his parents and family run Bonniebrow Farm, owned by the Moore family for over two generations in Cordova, TN. Upon graduation from Germantown High School, he joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve Unit and would go on to serve 8 years in the reserves. He completed his undergraduate studies in Pre-Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, where he met his wife of 63 years, Alice, a student in Dietetics and Food Service Management from Rogersville, TN.
George received his Doctor in Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University (1965) and went on to gain further veterinary experience in Glasgow, KY and Goldsboro, NC, then acquired his own practice, Somerset Animal Hospital in Somerset, KY. Dr. Moore ran the highly regarded practice for 45 years with a focus on services for large and small animals, employing various partners and staff during that time, serving the Pulaski County area and beyond.
The Moores brought their sons up on their beloved family farm in southern Lincoln County where George took a great amount of pride in raising beef cattle, various crops, flowers, and gardens.
He was an active, former member of Grace Baptist Church, Somerset, Pleasant View Baptist Church, Waynesburg, and First United Methodist Church, Somerset, where he was involved in a variety of leadership roles and ministries including chairman council, choir member, Sunday School and childrens church teacher.
George is survived by his wife, Alice Johnson Moore; his sons, Roger (Anna Lou) Moore, of Eubank, KY, Keith (Rachel) Moore, of Louisville, KY, David (fiance Kelly Kennedy) Moore, of Ringgold, GA; six grandchildren, Dustin Lee (Mariah) Moore, of Eubank, KY, Dylan Reese Moore, Macey Elizabeth Moore, Blaire Elise Moore, Claire Susannah Moore, and Mia Faye Moore; his sister, Jane Moore (John T.) Burrows, of Raleigh, MS; and three great-grand children; Ava Grace Moore, Logan Andrew Moore, and Brice Cannon Moore. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members to mourn his passing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one grandson, Andrew Clinton Moore.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Morris & Hislope Funeral Home, Science Hill, KY with Bro. Vola Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Eubank Cemetery in Eubank, KY.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 11:00 AM until time for services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund or The Gideons International.
