John Ewell New, age 93, of Eubank, Kentucky, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at his home. John was born June 26, 1931 in Wayne County, Kentucky, the son of the late Dellas and Sarah Ethel New.
John gave his life to Christ at the age of 14 and was baptized at West Science Hill Baptist Church by Bro. Lloyd Sewell. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army. He served his country as a Private First Class from 1951-1953 and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He loved to share stories from his times in the service and proudly flew the American flag in his front yard.
John loved horses, dogs, guns, knives, and trucks. He enjoyed trading, buying, and sharing his treasures with his family. He was a very competitive Rook player and he was very hard to beat. John was a loyal UK basketball fan. If you stopped for a visit, you'd often find him watching a game or listening to the radio and his favorite gospel music groups. He was always tan from being outside in the sun while being followed around by his faithful cat of 18 years, Cody. He kept his yard meticulously mowed until his health began to fail him.
John is survived by his wife of 69 years, Laverne Mullins; two daughters, Judy (Donald) Branscum of Somerset, Kentucky, and Brenda (Dan) Burtt of Dayton, Ohio; one son, Bruce (Patty) New of Eubank, Kentucky; one daughter-in-law, Vicki New of Nicholasville, Kentucky; eight grandchildren: Shawna (Chris) Lundin, Donnie (Shelly) Branscum, Jennifer (Richard) Thompson, Jill Johnson, Amanda (Robert) Adams, Amy Hisle, Brittany (Jake) Meece, Shawn (Farrah) Dobbs; and sixteen great-grandchildren: Zachary Lundin, Matthew Lundin, Alyson (Mason) Morgan, Jonathan Branscum, Evan Thompson, Emily Thompson, Ethan Thompson, Abby Johnson, Blaine Johnson, Aiden Adams, Austin Adams, Molly Hisle, Mason Hisle, Maxton Hisle, Brooks Meece, and Jade Meece.
He was preceded in death by his son, Johnny Dale New; his parents, Dellas and Sarah Ethel New; and several of his siblings.
