Merrel Lee Hargis, 80, of Somerset, passed away Thursday, December 2, 2021 at the Golden Years Nursing Home in Monticello.
He was born February 21, 1941 in Somerset; son of the late Barney & Myrtle (Phelps) Hargis. He worked as a Foreman for Westing House and was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed going to Gospel singings, bowling, playing softball, mowing the lawn, being outdoors, going to the lake, and picnics. He was a loving, good father and husband who loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by a son, Ellis & (Tonia) Hargis; a daughter, Tonya & (Len) Arends; three step-sons, Jeff, Kevin, and Mike Schelben; two brothers, Jewell Hargis and Russell Hargis; a sister, Eletha Gilbert; a sister-in-law, May Hargis; several grandchildren & great-grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara; his first wife, Gladys Overton; a son, Carl Justice; and three siblings, Shirley & (J.C.) Wells, Floyd & (Marlene) Hargis, and Coy Hargis.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at the Chapel of Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Hargis Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home.
